In 2018, Westworld returned to HBO with a confidence rarely present in most TV shows – a multi-layered mystery series that demanded both attention and intense analysis thanks to its delivery of huge revelations.
Naturally, fans have been intensely waiting for new episodes of the sci fi-western hybrid since the season two finale which aired back in June 2018.
The show’s first ever episode saw the network’s largest ratings for a premiere since True Detective three years previous, which put it on the map as one of HBO’s most lucrative television shows.
Showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have made no secret of the fact that Westworld will be around for some time – should the channel still want it, of course – and that they already have a further two seasons of the series meticulously mapped out.
Here is everything we know about the third season.
When will it be released?
The show will return to HBO just under two years since the second began: 15 March, 2020.
In the UK, it returns to Sky Atlantic and NOW TV on 16 March.
HBO announced the premiere date on Twitter with a mini trailer that hinted at the apocalypse within the show’s universe.
Who will return?
Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris, Tessa Thompson and Jeffrey Wright will all return for more.
Meanwhile, Katja Herbers – who plays the Man in Black’s daughter – has hinted she might return in future episodes.
Any newcomers?
Joining the cast for season three are Aaron Paul, Vincent Cassel, Lena Waithe, Scott Mescudi, Marshawn Lynch, John Gallagher, Jr, Michael Ealy and Tommy Flanagan.
Speaking to The Independent in October, Paul said: ”I sat down with them and they pitched me this character [Caleb] and they pitched me the broad strokes of the arc of the rest of the series. It is insane. This show is so unbelievably ambitious and I walk onto these sets and my jaw is on the floor.

“I feel like I’m a little kid again playing cops and robbers on the biggest scale possible. It’s so much fun and I love sci-fi – that’s my favourite genre. It’s great.”
What is it about?
Not much is known about the third season, but a press release from HBO describes the new season as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the birth of a new form of life on Earth.”
More specifically, the hosts who escaped the park in season two are being hunted down on Earth while Maeve Millay (Newton) will be entering a brand new world set in the Second World War.
Are there trailers to watch?
Yes, there are two – one cryptic one that was released during the final ever episode of Game of Thrones last May, and another shown at Comic-Con last July.
