Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Take a moment to clamber inside the head of this incredibly unfortunate, and extremely ill-advised, weatherman. Just as an intellectual exercise, attempt to unveil the string of reasoning that brought this man to joke about his co-worker having sex with a dog live on air.

At the close of one of Wisconsin's NBC 15 adoption segments, morning-show anchor Christine Bellport seems particularly taken with the sweet, gentle Husky Bettina.

"OK Charlie, I'm going to sit here and just hang out with my new best friend," Bellport chimes, before throwing over to weather reporter Charlie Shortino.

"Really? I think you… You two should get a, uh, hotel room or something. That’s a lot of action going on over there," Shortino responded. Yes, this is the quip he decided to open with, made so much worse with the follow-up, "Probably the most action you’ve had in months, huh?"

There we have it. The Office's Michael Scott is a real, breathing person and he presents weather for NBC.

Following an excruciating moment of silence from his fellow news presenters, Shortino spluttered a half-hearted laugh and muttered, "Well, I crack myself up, if I don't crack anyone else up."
