From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Fans of The Walking Dead are fearing for the future of newly returned character Maggie Rhee after AMC released a preview of a forthcoming bonus episode.

Maggie (Lauren Cohan) was written out of the series in season nine, only to make a dramatic comeback at the end of last season, which aired in October 2020.

Now, an image of the character has been released by AMC ahead of the airing of six “bonus episodes” this year.

The bonus episodes, which feature the regular Walking Dead cast, are intended to tide viewers over while production on the main series has been disrupted by the ongoing pandemic.

Many fans were quick to identify an ominous figure in the background of the image of Maggie, which appears to be camouflaged to blend into the woodland backdrop.

“Is that a person?” asked one fan, while another asked: “What in the flying f*** is behind her?”

“What’s that creepy thing behind her?” queried someone else.

“That person in the back doesn’t look friendly!!  Gorilla warfare!!” noted one fan.

Not everyone was convinced the figure held some deep plot significance, however. One person suggested that the figure was in fact a “a cameraman or something”.

The Walking Dead returns to screens in the US on 28 February.
