Twin Peaks season 3 episode 7: The importance of this week's Fire Walk With Me reference

Hawk's discovery in the police station's bathroom stall offers some answers - but also raises a whole bunch of questions

With last week’s episode ending with Hawk’s miraculously guided extraction of a set of papers from a police station bathroom stall, this newest installment of Twin Peaks allowed us to glimpse at their contents.

Which turned out to be all the missing pages from Laura Palmer’s diary (except one), though its contents won’t be much of a surprise to fans: they detail an incident familiar from Fire Walk With Me, in which Laura dreams of the Black Lodge.

It’s here that she’s somehow visited by both Dale Cooper and Annie Blackburn (Heather Graham), with the latter telling her: “My name is Annie, and I've been with Laura and Dale. The good Dale is in the Lodge, and he can't leave. Write it in your diary.”

These are presumably the pages that Laura discovers are missing in Fire Walk With Me, which send her distraught to her friend Harold’s home under the (seeming) belief that BOB is responsible for tearing them out.

However, as another of the pages reminds us, BOB isn’t solely accountable for taking the pages from Laura’s diary. When she writes, “Now I know it wasn’t BOB. I know who it is”, she is presumably writing about Leland; it’s Leland who Hawk later rationalises was responsible for hiding the pages in the bathroom stall after he was taken in for questioning about the murder of Jacques Renault.

This all raises some interesting questions when it comes to season 3, however. BOB’s taking and hiding of the pages that describe Dale’s time in the Lodge seem to indicate his knowledge that this morsel of information would provide crucial in rescuing him from danger in the future. It is, indeed, the information that Hawk believes the Log Lady wanted him to find.

How do BOB, Cooper’s doppelganger, and their plans for the good Cooper all tie together? How did the Log Lady know about these missing pages? How was Annie able to communicate with Laura? This mysterious prescience, in particular, seems to indicate a scheme far grander than Hawk may be expecting. We can only hope for some answers come soon.
