John Oliver has mocked Donald Trump’s Space Force announcement, likening the US president to “a child that you hate”.
Trump attracted criticism and derision as the flag for a new space-based military program was unveiled, with the president claiming that a “super duper” new missile was also in development.
Speaking on his HBO topical comedy series Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the comedian and TV presenter said: “While you would expect the president to be laser-focused on this pandemic and nothing else, he took a break on Friday to unveil the Space Force flag and do a little bragging.
“Yeah. That happened. Donald Trump posed with a gigantic Space Force flag whilst standing way too close to someone, referred to a super duper missile, and called the US ‘the leader in space’.”
He continued: “[Trump] truly has the spirit, brain, appetite, temper, patience and wit of a child that you hate.”
Oliver, who has been a regular critic of Trump throughout the president’s time in office, also lamented the government’s handling of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“It feels like as time goes on, we’re about to find out more clear warning signs that the Trump administration flat out ignored,” he said.
