Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The fate of the judges will be in your hands when the new series of The X Factor kicks off this weekend.

In an exciting new twist, viewers will be given the chance to vote for which judge will mentor which category - the Boys, the Girls, the Over-25s and the Groups.

There will be hashtags to enable live Twitter voting, which opens during the opening episode on Saturday night and closes at 12pm next Tuesday 1 September.

Simon Cowell, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and new judges Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw have been given their very own emoji which will appear next to tweets, that will take the format #SimonBoys, #CherylGirls, #NickGroups or #RitaOvers.

Cowell has promised strong contenders all round, saying ahead of the show's launch: "Interestingly, there's no weak category this year. I can see who the winner of each category could be. It could all chance, we've only seen them for the first time, then the second time we see them they could be terrible. So we'll see."

It seems that both Fernandez-Versini and Ora are competing for the Groups, which the latter describes as "literally on fire".

"We have got three groups that I would take, right now from their first audition, straight through to the live shows and I would have no qualms about doing that," Fernandez-Versini added.

Another twist will see the Judges' Houses round air live from four luxurious global locations.

Catch The X Factor at 8pm on ITV on Saturday 29 August.
