Your support makes all the difference.The Walking Dead has told fans who are “uncomfortable” with the show’s LGBTQ+ storylines to unfollow the official social media account.
A tweet shared from the account of the long-running zombie drama series on Tuesday (26 January) said that there was “no place” in the show’s fandom for discriminatory views.
“Hi, hello,” the post read. “If LGBTQ+ characters on television (or anywhere) make you uncomfortable or angry, please unfollow us.
“While we also encourage you to look within and be more accepting, know that there is no place in our fandom for hateful discrimination or wilful ignorance. Thank you.”
At the time of writing, the tweet has been liked more than 18,000 times, prompting an outpouring of support from fans of the show.
“The LGBTQ+ characters are a wonderful and important part of not only the graphic novels but the show and we fully support them!” one fan commented.
“Thank you AMC!! Some people need to hear it,” another reply read.
“Wow, as a trans person, you really don’t see a lot of shows or just companies just outright say something like this, it’s very much appreciated, thank you,” one commenter wrote.
The comment was likely made in reference to a relationship between two male characters, Felix (Nico Tortorella) and Will (Jelani Alladin), on spin-off series The Walking Dead: World Beyond.
The Walking Dead first aired in 2010 and is currently part way through airing its 10th season, which was forced to take a mid-season hiatus due the pandemic.
Season 11 of the show has been confirmed as its final outing and will run for 24 episodes.
