From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. As this year’s The Voice comes to an end, with Kevin Simm being crowned winner, viewers have turned their attention towards those who didn’t come up top.

One such contestant, Cody Frost, an 18-year-old singer under Boy George’s mentorship, was one of the first to go in the live finals, prompting dozens to accuse the show of being ‘fixed’.

When asked about leaving the competition, George revealed the former X-Factor contestant was quite relieved not to make it to the very end.

"She doesn't have to do the winner's single either, so we're pleased about that,” he quipped. However, the comment sparked a backlash on Twitter, many of whom speculated that she was never meant to make it to the very end.

“Cody Frost was supposed to win this shame on The Voice UK it's an absolute fix,” wrote one Tweeter, while another wrote “Cody should of won. Makes me think fix.”

Others complained they couldn’t get through to vote in the first place, with one person writing: “It was a fix so not fair as my voting on my app was not working so couldn't vote as would of voted for Cody all the way”.

One reason Frost may not have wanted to win is because - as is often the case with these shows, particularly The X Factor - the runners-up often have a more lucrative career. For instance, One Direction, Olly Murs, and JLS did not win The X Factor but have had successful careers.

The BBC denied all claims of wrongdoing, telling the tabloid "all voting systems were fine.” Meanwhile, Kevin Simm, mentored by Kaiser Chief Ricky Wilson, went on to win the competition, saying of his victory: "I can't believe it. I'm so grateful to everyone who has voted for me.”

Simm is no stranger to talent contests, having been a member of Liberty X who came runner-up on the show Popstars in 2001.

The Voice will not return to the BBC next year, having been picked up by ITV.
