The streaming platform announced on Monday that Ryan Murphy’s comedy-drama will return on 19 June.
First-look production stills give a glance at Ben Platt’s return as the ambitious Payton Hobart, now running for a spot in the New York Senate against Judith Light’s Dede Standish – whose chief of staff Hadassah Gold is portrayed by none other than Bette Midler.
Perhaps one of the biggest mysteries of the upcoming season lies with Payton’s mother Georgina Hobart (Gwyneth Paltrow), who, according to Netflix’s synopsis, “makes a momentous decision that threatens to upstage [her son] and everything he’s hoping to accomplish”.
One of the images released by Netflix features Georgina behind a stand during what looks like a political debate on CNN, suggesting that Georgina could have opted to run for office for herself.
Such a decision would likely throw a wrench in Payton’s longtime ambition to one day become president of the United States – and lead to an abundance of family drama.
Season one of The Politician saw Payton run for student body president at his California high school, and struggle to reconcile his boundless political ambition with his personal life.
In addition to Platt, Paltrow, Light, and Midler, the second season will star Lucy Boynton, Zoey Deutch, Julia Schlaepfer, Laura Dreyfuss, Theo Germaine, and Rahne Jones.
It will be comprised of seven episodes.
