Star Wars fans are feeling extremely excited about the latest twist in The Mandalorian.

The spin-off TV show returned for its second season on Friday (30 October), with Disney+ subscribers rushing to see what Mando (Pedro Pascal) gets up to next.

In similar fashion to the show’s very first episode, which unveiled baby Yoda, this season premiere introduced a surprise character in its closing moments too.

*Spoilers follow – you have been warned*

If you’re a casual Star Wars fan, you might be left wondering who this particular character is. The more obsessive fan will notice immediately that the bounty hunter who shows up at the end is Boba Fett.

It’s a huge move considering Boba Fett is the well-known mercenary from the original Star Wars trilogy.

Intriguingly, he’s introduced here without the green beskar armour he’s always been seen in – and he’s played by Temuera Morrison, who last appeared in the franchise Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones.

Now, Jango Fett was the bounty hunter that raised Boba, but it’s revealed in Attack of the Clones that Boba is an exact cloned copy of himself.

Boba’s first appearance arrived in The Empire Strikes Back. He then seemed to be killed off in Return of the Jedi after being pushed into the Sarlacc pit, but it has been theorised ever since that he actually made it out of the pit alive.

Considering Jango Fett was killed by Mace Windu long ago, Morrison’s casting as the mysterious character at the end of The Mandalorian suggests that the only character this could possibly be is Boba – especially as his helmet is seen earlier on in the episode being worn by a new character named Marshall Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant).

Fans were overjoyed by the twist.

“This is a moment I've waited for 37 years when I was in 2nd grade and theorising with my friends how he could have made it out of the sarlacc pit,” one person wrote. “Glad that my faith in the end paid off!”

“Boba surviving the pit being canon it's something I thought I'd never see,” another added.
