The four-part series focuses on the 1985 kidnapping and murder of Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
Speaking to Fox, filmmaker Tiller Russell recalled having a pistol pulled on him when he was conducting interviews as part of research for the series.
“When we first sat down to interview Jorge Godoy for example, like literally I asked him one question and he kicked the table out of the way, jumped to his feet, and pulled out a pistol,” he said.
“And I looked over at the cinematographer and like, both of our eyes were big as saucers. And I thought ‘holy s***, this is going to be a wild one.’”
Russell and his team reportedly spent 15 years researching Camarena’s story and interviewing people closely linked to him to ensure it was told accurately.
The docuseries tells the story of Camarena who was 37-years-old and working for the US government in Mexico when he was kidnapped, tortured, and eventually killed by cartel members. It is one of the most notorious murders in the history of the DEA.
The Last Narc is now available to stream on Amazon Prime.
