From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Killing star Sofie Grabol will make her debut in a new British drama about a mysterious death in the Arctic Circle.

The actress, who is best known for playing jumper-wearing Sarah Lund, will be swapping her detective’s hat to play a local politician in Icelandic noir Fortitude.

Similar to The Killing, the drama centres on a close-knit community deeply affected by the horrific murder of one of its residents.

The new drama will see Grabol play a character more similar to The Killing’s local politician Troels Hartmann.

The actress will take on the role of the town’s Governor, who is concerned the murder will ruin her ambitious plans to regenerate the area.

Grabol has previously made a guest appearance on Absolutely Fabulous in 2011, but has never before starred in a British series despite the popularity of The Killing in the UK.

Grabol will star alongside Call The Midwife’s Jessica Raine, The Hunger Games’ Stanley Tucci and Game of Thrones’ Richard Dormer, in what is being called Sky Atlantic’s “most ambitious drama to date”.

She will also be joined by Michael Gambon (Harry Potter), Christopher Eccleston (Thor: The Dark World), Luke Treadaway (Clash of the Titans), Nicholas Pinnock (Top Boy) and Johnny Harris (This is England).
