From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Another year, another series of The Great British Bake Off grips the nation, the first week of which wasn’t without drama as Jane Beedle took star baker.

Why were fans annoyed by Jane’s victory? Well, many thought Selasi Gbormittah, the smooth banker whose motorbike-riding antics won over dozens of viewers.

During his tenure in the tent throughout episode one, the baker impressed by staying 'chill' despite forgetting to put cinnamon in his drizzle cake. His Jaffa cakes, meanwhile, were all the rage, winning him the technical challenge.

Adding to his laid back attitude is his way with words, the baker uttering the best line of the season so far: ”I don't understand it, I'm just baking it.”

Tweeters were united in their love for the 30-year-old, including ex-Bake Off contestant Tamal Ray, who posted the message: “I feel like Selasi is going to single-handedly redeem the banking profession.”

Gbormittah managed to make an impression in our episode one recap, taking the ‘Mystery of the Week’ prize: “During the Showstopper round, Selasi "the laid back one" had a bunch of red roses on his kitchen unit. Why? (I like to think they were a present from Mary.)”

Bake Off returns next Wednesday at 8pm on BBC 1.
