Fans of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance are devastated following Netflix decision to cancel the show after just one season.

The fantasy puppet series won an Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Programme over the weekend, but that wasn’t enough to convince Netflix to renew the show.

“We can confirm that there will not be an additional season of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” said executive producer Lisa Henson in a statement. “We know fans are eager to learn how this chapter of The Dark Crystal saga concludes and we’ll look for ways to tell that story in the future.”

She added: “We are so grateful to Netflix for trusting us to realise this ambitious series; we are deeply proud of our work on Age of Resistance, and the acclaim it has received from fans, critics and our peers.”

Fans of the show are not happy with the news, with one person tweeting: “I cannot believe Netflix has cancelled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Why drag it out for a year, put it forward for an Emmy, then just as it wins and the fandom and cast/crew are on a high suddenly cancel it. Absolute s*** show of a year so far with Netflix at the helm!”

“I’m actually so mad at the dark crystal thing,” wrote another. “Are you f***in serious. that was so good and it ended in a cliffhanger.”

One social media user said they “continue to be disappointed again and again” by Netflix axing shows, while a fourth added: “The Dark Crystal was the most impressive thing I've ever seen on television. It was a top 10 show and just won an Emmy. Netflix has an operating budget of $17 billion. This cancellation just doesn't add up. It feels cruel.”

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance was a prequel series to the original 1982 Jim Henson film, which tells the story of a group of young Gelflings (elf-like creatures) who discover the horrifying plan of their evil overlords and go on a mission to try to save their world, planet Thra.

Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel led a voice cast that also included starry names such as Helena Bonham Carter, Natalie Dormer, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, Mark Hamill, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key and Simon Pegg.
