During Monday’s episode (22 February) of the ITV quiz show, the competitors went up against chaser Anne Hegerty – also known as The Governess – with three of them making it to the final round.
Harriet, Alex and Paul were left competing for a £14,000 prize with a three-point head start on Hegerty.
However, the team only managed to get four questions right between them in two minutes, leading the chaser to beat them in 36 seconds.
“Ouch,” host Bradley Walsh told the team. “I didn’t see that coming.”
“I think what happened was that you got some tricky ones there and you let that affect your heads and then you started getting the ones wrong that you should’ve got right,” Hegerty added.
After the team lost the game, Walsh said he wouldn’t “read out the facts and figures”. However, viewers at home criticised the team for their “painful” score.
“Not so lucky 7 ??? That must be a record low,” one tweet read, while another said: “My toes snapped off watching that final chase.”
“F***ing shocking. Utter embarrassment. I should’ve taken my HD signal breaking up on the recording as a sign not to bother watching,” another commented.
“I can’t believe they knew the answer to 4 questions, literally the worst team ever,” another social media user wrote.
However, some viewers suggested that the team were given a difficult group of questions.
“My god the final chase q’s for the team were HARD, I got a few more than them but really not by much,” one viewer commented.
Despite tweets from some viewers, this was not the lowest score achieved in the final round of The Chase, as a previous team had only scored three in the last round.
