The Boys’ showrunner Eric Kripke has lampooned Donald Trump supporters after they depicted the president as the series’ villain.

Homelander is the villain of Amazon Prime’s hit superhero show. Throughout the series, he is portrayed as a xenophobe. In it, he also commits murders and has sex with a Nazi.

During a #MillionMAGAMarch in Washington, DC, last week, a few Trump supporters seemed to misunderstand the significance of Homelander when one dressed up as the villain while wearing a Trump mask, suggesting that the president is evil.

An image of the scenario was shared on social media, which was then retweeted by The Boys showrunner Kripke who expressed confusion over why Trump supporters would liken the president to the show’s villain.

In his tweet, which has since received over 5,000 likes, Kripke wrote: “Um… are they actually watching the show?”

This is not the first time that Trump’s supporters have been mocked for misinterpreting various popular culture references.

Earlier this month, they found themselves the subject of mockery on Twitter after campaigning for the president’s re-election by dancing and rapping to Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name” while waving flags emblazoned with the phrase “Blue Lives Matter”.

Many pointed out the irony in their song choice, given that the 1992 track was written in opposition to institutional racism and brutality at the hands of the police in America.

Even guitarist Tom Morello responded to the clip on Twitter: “Not exactly what we had in mind.”

Similarly, Trump’s fanbase attracted criticism when they played Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” in support of the president amid his coronavirus diagnosis earlier this year.

The song is widely believed to be a critique of America for marginalising working-class veterans upon their return to the homeland.

In June, Springsteen called the president a “threat to our democracy” and said he “makes any kind of reform that much harder”.
