Now, The Big Bang Theory has joined the club, finishing its ninth season with a somewhat muted cliffhanger.
** Spoilers for the season nine finale of TBBT ’The Convergence Convergence’ ahead **
In the season’s last episode, Penny and Leonard agree to have a formal wedding to appease their parents. Enter Leonard's never-before-seen father, Alfred, played by Judd Hirsch, a man with a very similar sense of humour to his son.
As the episode progresses, it becomes apparent that Alfred and Mary, Sheldon’s mother, are getting along like a house on fire, ending up having a drink together in their hotel.
Eventually, Leonard and Sheldon try to get hold of their respective parents but discover their phones are switched off, much to Penny’s amusement (and the pair's horror).
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the ‘abrupt’ ending, showrunner Steve Molaro said: “In the vein of cliffhangers, there tends to be an abruptness to it.
“Everything that we needed to take care of in that episode got taken care of. If it left you feeling like you wanted more, then hopefully we wrote it correctly.”
Speaking about the upcoming season 10, he revealed: “The plan for now, and it's not set in stone, is that we're coming back right back into the situation that was created the night before.
Molaro added: “Leonard’s father and Sheldon's mother, all they did was go off and have a nightcap and turn off their phones. I don't think there's any thoughts of those two actually getting married or running off to do anything like that. This is just an initial baby step in whatever that can be.”

So did they/didn’t they get together? It’s not exactly is Jon Snow alive, is it? Either way, the next series of The Big Bang Theory could very well be the show’s last.
