US channel The CW's hunt for a televised version of DC hero Superman has ended. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Teen Wolf actor Tyler Hoechlin.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor will take on the role of Clark Kent in the popular TV series Supergirl.

The 28-year-old will reportedly appear near the beginning of the show's second season playing the cousin of Melissa Benoist's protagonist.

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said: "Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character."

Hoechlin starred in four seasons of TV series Teen Wolf. His list of film credits include Hall Pass, recent Richard Linklater film Everybody Wants Some!! and the final two upcoming Fifty Shades films released in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

You might even recognise the actor from Sam Mendes' 2002 crime film Road to Perdition in which he played the son of Tom Hanks' protagonist.

Supergirl season two will begin airing later this year.
