Sweet Magnolias, the TV series adaptation of Sherryl Woods’s romance novels series of the same name, has become the most popular show on the platform in the US, a week after its release.
The drama began streaming on the platform on 19 May, introducing fans to the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina, and the eventful lives of its residents – notably, those of protagonists Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and Helen (Heather Headley).
After 10 episodes, the first season of Sweet Magnolias wrapped up with a dramatic prom-themed episode, which itself ended on a cliffhanger. Fans are already clamouring for a second season, hoping it would bring an answer to the many questions left open-ended by the finale.
While Netflix has yet to announce Sweet Magnolias‘ renewal, the show’s success – and the fact that Woods’s book series provides an abundance of source material – suggest that there could be grounds for a second season.
Here are the three main questions fans will want answers to, should the show get another instalment:
Who was the other person in the car?
This is the main question weighing on fans’ minds after the season one finale.
By the end of the episode, Maddie and her ex-husband Bill have just learnt that their son Kyle has been injured in a car crash, along with one other person. The identity of the passenger isn’t revealed – was it Dana Sue’s daughter Annie? Was it Kyle’s friend Nellie? Was it his brother Tyler? Was it someone else altogether?
As of now, the answer is anyone’s guess – but it would certainly be one of the first to be tackled in a possible second season.
Will Maddie give Bill a second chance?
Season one revolved in large part around Maddie and Bill’s split and its fallout – including Maddie’s second chance at love with her son Tyler’s baseball coach Cal Maddox.
However, by the end of the season, Maddie and Cal’s relationship seems to have reached a dead-end after an explosive argument about Tyler’s future. Bill, meanwhile, is begging Maddie to take him back, which she appears to be considering – but before she can make a decision, the phone rings with news of the car crash.

Season two would most likely explore Bill and Maddie’s relationship and potential reconciliation further, though it seems unlikely that Cal would be gone from Maddie’s life for good.
What will become of Helen and Dana Sue?
During the finale, Helen calls it quits with her longtime love interest Ryan, as their visions for the future can’t seem to align. Dana Sue is plenty busy with her own drama, as she attempts to divorce her ex-husband Ronnie for good while Isaac, a young employee at her restaurant, asks Dana Sue whether she’s actually his mother.
Those storylines are put on hold as news of the car crash surfaces, further setting the stage for an eventful season two.
