However, Netflix has changed things up somewhat, releasing numerous highly acclaimed shows including The Get Down, Bojack Horseman season two, and Stranger Things.
The latter has been a huge runaway success thanks to the quality of every episode, something that has not gone unnoticed by those behind the streaming service who have commissioned another season already.
Immediately after the announcement, creators of the show, The Duffer Brothers, sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about what we can expect from the upcoming season, detailing how we will revisit characters from the first season and introduce four new ones.
“We don’t know about Eleven,” Ross Duffer told the publication. “We leave that up in the air.” His brother, Matt, added that we will see a lot more of the Upside Down.
“We kinda just peeled back the curtain and revealed a tiny bit of the Upside Down. So we definitely want to explore a little bit more. There’s a lot we don’t know about the Upside Down at the end of season one.”
Speculators have wondered whether Stranger Things would follow in American Horror Story’s path and be an anthology series, something the duo never considered.
“I think we talked like a larger time jump where the kids are older now and it’s a different decade,” Ross said. “That’s something we batted around from the very beginning. But for us, there’s still more story here [in the 1980s], there’s still things that are unresolved.”
Matt also reasoned why the upcoming season will only be nine episodes, despite most other Netflix shows being more: “If it gets any longer, it gets unwieldy for us,” Matt said. “We want to make sure it’s manageable and we want to be able to tell a movie-like story where it’s never treading water. We want it to have the same feel and pacing as season 1. I think if we extend it too much, it will have a very different feel.”
