Based on the adventures of Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes, the four-hour epic was originally conceived by the famous Dalton Trumbo, who died in 1976.
According to the official synopses, the series — titled Cortes — will focus on the legendary conqueror leading a “rebellious expedition to the heart of King Montezuma II’s Aztec empire, connecting two civilisations for the first time and changing the course of history.”
Steven Zaillian (who penned Schindler’s List) has written the latest script, based on the original Trumbo screenplay, with Spielberg and his Amblin Television acting as producers.
No Country for Old Men, Skyfall, and Mother! actor Javier Bardem will lead the series, as well as executive produce. The Americans duo Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will also executive produce, as will Zallian.
“It is a privilege to tell this epic story— one that is full of drama and conflict within this huge, historical spectacle where two distant civilisations clash at the height of their reign,” said Bardem.
“The best and worst of human nature came to life in all its light and darkness. As an actor, there is no better challenge than to serve such a unique project that I have been passionate about for years, and I am thrilled to be working with this dream team of Steven Spielberg, Steven Zaillian and Amazon.”
Sharon Yguado, head of scripted series at Amazon said: “There are few moments in history that shape an entire culture such as Cortes’ story, and this series will be one filled with drama and adventure.”
No release date has yet been announced. Meanwhile, Amazon continues to work on various high-profile television series, including the upcoming Lord of the Rings (said to be the most expensive production ever made).
