From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Stephen Colbert has stood adamantly against Donald Trump, leading to the President labelling the host a ‘filthy, no talent guy’ — Colbert’s rating have unsurprisingly skyrocketed as a result.
Thanks to The Washington Post’s scoop claiming Trump leaked classified secrets to Russia, Colbert’s writing team were given yet more ammunition.
After calling the leak ‘bad news’, Colbert added: “The good news? Trump found the leaker.”
The host pointed out how the publication’s report censors the information revealed by Trump because it’s “code-word information,” which Colbert describes as so important “you have to replace things with other words”.
“You have to say things like, ‘The package has been delivered, the squirrel is in the basket, the idiot is in the Oval,’” he joked. “It could mean anything.”
Colbert — presumably with little time to prepare for the huge leak — then spoke once more about the firing of FBI director James Comey and allegations Trump asked the advisor to pledge loyalty. He also brought up Sean Spicer’s ability to keep deferring questions about leaked tapes.
“I have something to say here. Donald Trump,” Colbert said. “First of all, if you’re watching: you’re a bad president, please resign. Second, please please please don’t take Sean Spicer from us. Where am I going to get my daily dose of veiled anger and condescension?” Watch below.
Meanwhile, The Daily Show also criticised Trump over the Russia leak, resurfacing numerous old Tweets made by Republicans about mishandling information.
