Battle scene in Star Trek: Insurrection features actor Stephanie Niznik

Star Trek actor Stephanie Niznik has died at the age of 52.

According to Variety, the star – also known for playing the neighbour Nina Feenery in US drama Everwood – reportedly died unexpectedly on 23 June.

Niznik, who was born in Maine, started out with small acting roles in Vanishing Son and Murder She Wrote before landing a recurring role on Diagnosis Murder.

It was Star Trek that shot Niznik to wider recognition. She played Trill Starfleet Ensign Kell Perim in the 1998 film Star Trek: Insurrection and returned to the universe to play the Wraith in a 2002 episode of Star Trek: Enterprise.

Her other credits included Grey's Anatomy, NCIS and a season four episode of Lost.

As well as acting, she was an active force in voluntary work for hunger, children and animal rescue organisations.

Niznik's cause of death is unknown. She is said to be survived by her mother, stepfather, brother, sister-in-law, niece, nephews, aunt, uncle, and her beloved dogs, Nucleus and Jake.
