Star Trek: Picard trailer

Star Trek fans might have a huge reunion on their hands in the next season of Picard.

A former co-star of Patrick Stewart’s has fuelled speculation of a return to the universe for the first time since The Next Generation aired its finale in 1994.

The character in question is Beverly Crusher, the former love interest of Picard’s played by Gates McFadden.

McFadden herself teased a potential return during an interview with TrekMovie.

When asked if she could appear in the new season of the Amazon Prime Video series, she said: “Well, I don’t know. There’s a good chance, let’s put it that way. But I have no contract signed.”

The character was created by Gene Roddenberry as Picard’s “primary... love interest”, which McFadden says “got changed” as the series went on.

“That wasn’t changed by me,” she said, adding: “The character [had] become matron-like, and it was just weird.”

She said the chance to explore what a relationship between Crusher and Picard would look like years into the future “would be lovely”.

The only Next Generation actor who is confirmed to appear in the new season of Picard is Whoopi Goldberg, who was invited to appear by Stewart himself during an emotional appearance on Goldberg’s show The View.

McFadden will take part in a virtual GalaxyCon panel this Sunday (5 July).
