Kurt Sutter's series, about a close-knit group of Californian motorcyclists, starred Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, Ron Perlman and Mark Boone Junior.
The creator has been vocal about revisiting the world in a potential spin-off ever since the final episode aired in 2014 but only now has FX greenlit the pilot for a continuation that's titled Mayans MC.
It is likely that fans would have seen the series earlier had Simmer not been hard at work on The Bastard Executioner, a series - featuring Ed Sheeran (really) - that didn't receive a full-season order.
The pilot episode will be directed by Sutter himself with shooting scheduled to begin in March; the Mayans featured in Sons of Anarchy as a fellow motorcycle club of the titular crew.
FX's other hit series includes Fargo, American Crime Story and American Horror Story which just wrapped its sixth season, Roanoke.
The network will also air Taboo, the upcoming series from Ridley Scott, Tom Hardy and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight which will air in the UK this coming January.
