From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Despite Donald Trump lampooning his Saturday Night Live impression on multiple occasions, Alec Baldwin once again opened the comedy show by mocking the President-elect.

Joined by Kate McKinnon’s Kellyanne Conway, it wasn’t long before the pair discussed cabinet nominee Rick Perry (“I saw him on Dancing With the Stars. This guy has so much energy, it’s just unpresidented!”) and inauguration plans.

Moments into the sketch, a shirtless Vladimir Putin, played by Beck Bennett, fell down the chimney, telling Trump “We think you are the best candidate, the smartest candidate, the Manchurian candidate” while offering him a “Shelf-Elf” as a ‘present’.

The big surprise came when John Goodman, who recently starred in 10 Cloverfield Lane, entered as Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson, Trump’s Secretary of State pick.

Upon seeing Putin, the friendly pair began discussing where to start drilling for oil, all while Baldwin’s Trump questions how they will take down Vanity Fair. Watch the hilarious cold opening below.

Also during the episode, McKinnon mocked Hilary Clinton with a spoof of Love Actually, which you can watch here. Last week, Saturday Night Live brought in Bryan Cranston to mock Trump’s cabinet choices, having the actor reprise his role as Walter White from Breaking Bad.
