'I need to know what a frog planet’s instruments would sound like'

After what feels like an eternity, Rick and Morty’s third season has finally started (for real this time), the second episode premiering over the weekend.

Of course, the reason for the delay, as explained by co-creator Dan Harmon multiple times, was their need to perfect the scripts, attempting to make the best season yet.

Creative juices weren’t just needed on the scripts though; Rick and Morty thrives because of hilarious visual and audio gags dotted throughout every episode.

Ryan Elder no doubt has one of the hardest jobs on the show, acting as the composer, having written the show’s theme tune, soundtracked an alien bondage dream sequence, and many more.

CNN’s Great Big Story tracked down Elder, along with Harmon, creating a short clip about how the music behind Rick and Morty comes together.

The clip begins with Harmon: “I need to know what a frog planet’s instruments would sound like.” “It’s like an intergalactic race riot, but it’s a love story.” “I need a royal march for an insect species that thinks its koalas.”

Luckily, the composer has an excellent, rather wild imagination, offering an insight into how he wrote the alien song seen in the episode ‘Get Shwifty’. Watch below.
