Comedian Paul O'Grady is due to be discharged from hospital today after being admitted following an angina attack on Monday.

The 58-year old, famous for his drag queen alter-ego Lily Savage, has suffered two heart attacks in the past and was believed to be undergoing surgery after feeling unwell.

Hospital management have since said an emergency operation was unnecessary after routine tests showed that "all is fine".

The TV star has thanked both hospital staff and concerned fans "for their kindness" in a statement, assuring them that he is "feeling much better".

Presenter Stephen Mulhern and singer Michael Ball stood in for O'Grady when he was forced to miss his teatime ITV chat show.

Many well-wishing celebrities posted messages on social media, including DJ Chris Moyles, Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden and presenter Phillip Schofield.

Actress Julie Goodyear joked that although the star "will do anything to attract attention", being taken into hospital is "ridiculous". "Get your ass back home and have a few lies-in and a good rest!", she tweeted.

ITV has said O'Grady's show will be presented by Emma Willis, Jo Brand and Vernon Kay for the rest of the week while the comedian recovers.
