From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Regular Wheel of Fortune viewers are likely familiar with host Pat Sajak's spiky banter, but it's not often that a contestant pushes back.

That changed on Wednesday's (2 December) episode when contestant Greg Wylie playfully snarked back at Sajak.

Discussing his fencing hobby with the longtime host, Wylie described the activity that he does in his free time. "It’s more Renaissance outfits and we do competitive fencing tournaments, you can do multiple players on the field,” Wylie said. "So basically I go out on the weekend and stab my friends. So it’s very cathartic."

Sajak then asked about Wylie's family; the Burbank resident shares two daughters, 14 and 12, with his wife of 14 years. Remarking how Wylie’s youngest is nearly a teenager, Sajak joked, "Well just stay on guard. Fencing humor there."

"I got the point," Wylie responded, eliciting a stern look from Sajak before going to commercial.

"I’m so glad someone captured this because I was laughing so hard," tweeted @alimanning.

"The look from @patsajak. I’m dead," tweeted @sarah_morgan_b.

"This exchange between Pat Sajak and Greg Wylie, my high school classmate, was pretty funny. Both are sharp guys," wrote @caroltoler.

For his part, Wylie was good-humored about the whole thing, writing on Twitter, "Hey, everyone, Greg Wylie here! If you are interested in learning more about historical fencing, check out http://sca.org! BTW, if @patsajak wants to have a Pun-off, I'm up for it!"

The moment mirrored another exchange from last week, where Sajak jokingly called a contestant "ungrateful" but later apologized.

Contestant David McBain guessed the phrase "kitchen oven" correctly but asked, "Kitchen oven? What was that? Who calls it a 'kitchen oven'?"

"You won, don't argue, Darin! You got the puzzle," Sajak jokingly said in response. "Ungrateful players, I've had it!"
