From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Oprah Winfrey will present a star-studded graduation ceremony for the class of 2020 during coronavirus lockdown.

With public events being banned across the world due to the health crisis, many university students in the UK, US and around the world have seen their graduations cancelled or replaced with digital ceremonies.

To brighten the spirits of these new graduates, Winfrey will host virtual graduation event #Graduation 2020, giving the commencement speech at the streaming event being broadcast on Facebook and Instagram on 15 May.

Joining the TV personality will be comedian Awkwafina, actor Jennifer Garner, rapper Lil Nas X and gymnast Simone Biles, who will also appear as featured speakers during the stream.

Additionally, Miley Cyrus will be on hand to perform a rendition of her motivational 2009 ballad “The Climb”.

Winfrey has already donated $10m (roughly £8m) to coronavirus relief efforts, including a $1m contribution to America’s Food Fund.

“I believe that America’s Food Fund will be a powerful way to make a difference for our neighbours in need and am committing $1m to this fund to support those facing food insecurity,” Winfrey wrote.
