Netflix teases 'Becoming'

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Netflix has curated a collection of films, TV series and stand-up specials under the banner of “Black Lives Matter”.

The streaming service’s official Twitter account wrote: “When we say, ‘Black Lives Matter’, we also mean, ‘Black storytelling matters’.

“With an understanding that our commitment to true, systemic change will take time – we’re starting by highlighting powerful and complex narratives about the Black experience.”

The post continued: “When you log onto Netflix today, you will see a carefully curated list of titles that only begin to tell the complex and layered stories about racial injustice and Blackness in America.”

The move comes amid global anti-racism protests following the killing of Minneapolis man George Floyd while in custody of police officers.

The films in the collection include Ava DuVernay’s widely praised documentary about the US prison complex, 13th, Dee Rees’s period drama Mudbound, and Orange is the New Black.

Also included in the collection is the acclaimed sketch show The Astronomy Club, which was recently cancelled by the streaming service after just one season. Its creators wrote on Twitter: “Hoping that more black artists & comedians are given the platform to have voices in the future.”

Netflix has made the collection available around the world; it can be accessed here.
