For the past few months, Modern Family fans have been preparing themselves to say goodbye to the beloved sitcom at the end of season 10 – but it now looks like they might not have to bid the show farewell just yet.

Julie Bowen, who plays Claire Dunphy on the ABC series, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who stars as her brother Mitchell Pritchett, have both teased the possibility of an 11th season, months after co-creator Steven Levitan said he couldn't "imagine" going over 10 instalments.

Bowen discussed a potential 11th season with Busy Philipps, telling the actor on her new late-night talk show, Busy Tonight: "I think that there is, I've been told that there is, you know.

"The ink is not dry but I have very positive feelings about it."

Ferguson, who also appeared on Philipps's show, sounded equally optimistic about a possible season 11.

"Your series finale is coming up this year, right?" Philipps asked, echoing what had been the official line thus far.

"Maybe. We might do one more," Ferguson answered. "Maybe, I don't know. Breaking news!"

Modern Family, which has won 22 Emmys, is currently in its ninth season and has been renewed for a 10th series.

Levitan and co-creator Christopher Lloyd had previously said the sitcom's 10th season was slated to be its last.

"Our plan is to end it at 10," Levitan told The Hollywood Reporter in January.

"If we can leave with most of our audience wanting more, I think that's the right way to do it. Never say never, but I just can't imagine that we'd go past that."

In October, though, Levitan appeared less certain of his plans, telling The Hollywood Reporter: "I thought season 10 was going to be it. I think everyone has said season 11 is it.

"If we were to do it, season 11 would be it, for sure. And I'm not sure it would be a full season. We're all trying to figure that out."
