This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Michelle Obama’s first guest on her new podcast will be her husband, former President Barack Obama.

The announcement was made on Friday in the form of a new trailer released by Spotify.

“In this first episode, I’ll be talking to somebody whose voice you’ll probably recognise right away,” the former first lady says.

Barack Obama can be heard saying: “You know me.”

Michelle Obama then teases her husband: “You are the eternal optimist – [a] ‘Yes we can’ man” (a reference to his 2008 presidential campaign slogan).

The first episode will stream on 29 July.

Other guests will include Conan O’Brien and other members of Michelle Obama’s “posse” – including “family, friends, and colleagues”.

The Michelle Obama podcast was announced earlier this month. It’s the result of a partnership between Spotify and the Obamas’ production company Higher Ground.

“My hope is that this series can be a place to explore meaningful topics together and sort through so many of the questions we’re all trying to answer in our own lives,” Michelle Obama said in a statement at the time.

“Perhaps most of all, I hope this podcast will help listeners open up new conversations—and hard conversations—with the people who matter most to them. That’s how we can build more understanding and empathy for one another.”
