Fans of The Mandalorian have been left stunned by a season finale which brought back one of the Star Wars saga’s biggest characters.

The spin-off series, which today (18 December) concluded its second season on Disney+, has brought in a number of characters from the Star Wars universe in recent episodes.

Bo Katan (Katee Sackhoff) and Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), from the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series are among those to have appeared in The Mandalorian already, alongside the original trilogy’s bounty hunter Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison).

But the finale has featured the biggest name to date. Stop reading here unless you are happy to find out spoilers from The Mandalorian’s season two finale, “The Rescue”.

For the past few weeks, Mandalorian fans have wondered which Jedi would appear to answer the call made by Grogu in “Chapter 14: The Tragedy”.

While some speculated it would be Samuel L Jackson’s Mace Windu, or Cal Kestis from the hit 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, it was in fact none other than Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), who arrived to save the day at the episode’s end.

With CGI technology in effect to bring Hamill closer to his appearance in 1984’s Return of the Jedi, Luke is seen wielding his famous green lightsaber as he battles to free Grogu from Moff Gideon, walking away with him at the episode’s close. There was also a cameo from Star Wars stalwart R2-D2.

Fans were blown away by the appearance, expressing their feelings on social media.

“What an amazing ‘feels so good’ moment. I just cried,” wrote one fan.

“THIS DID NOT JUST HAPPEN! I’M SO HAPPY!” wrote someone else.

“Luke Skywalker and Grogu. Some of the best Star Wars content ever. Thank you [series creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni],” wrote a third.

One person wrote: “The Luke Skywalker sequence at the end of the season finale is possibly the best since Darth Vader’s at the end of Rogue One & nearly as epic. Boba Fett’s post credits reveal at Jabba’s palace was also cool too.”

A post-credits sequence for the episode also revealed a new spin-off series focusing on Boba Fett.
