From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It was announced in June 2017 that series co-creator Neil Cross had signed up Idris Elba to return as the grizzled detective for four brand new episodes of the crime series following its apparent “climax” in 2015.
But sure enough, DCI Luther is back in a trailer that’s capped with a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo from none other than Ruth Wilson’s fan favourite, Alice Morgan, which you can watch below.
Other returning cast members include Dermot Crowley, Michael Smiley and Patrick Malahide as DSU Martin Schenk, Benny Silver and George Cornelius.
New recruits include Wunmi Mosaku, most recently seen in End of the F***ing World, and Cold Feet star Hermione Norris who’ll play psychiatrist Dr Vivien Lake.
Episodes will see “the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare” as a series of killings pave the way for “devastating consequences” for those closest to Luther.
Elba has teased the show’s return promising a “classic” return to form by assuring fans: “We’re not reinventing the wheel."
Wilson, who is currently winning rave reviews playing her own grandmother in BBC drama Mrs Wilson, confirmed her appearance to The Independent earlier this year, telling fans to expect the unexpected.
“She’s definitely back for a bit,’ she said. ”She is back with a vengeance.”
The series has generated a cult fan base since it began in 2010.
Cross has made no secret of the fact that he’d like to bring the character to the big screen following the show’s success overseas. Discussing these plans, Elba added: “It’s very much in our minds, the film. I think it could be an amazing series of films.”
