Love's Gillian Jacobs: 'It's so great to see women masturbating on screen instead of men for a change'
Her scene was angled more towards loneliness/boredom than the traditional humour/eroticism.
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Netflix’s under-the-radar hit Love (check it out if you haven’t yet) skewers the aloofness of 21st-century courtship so perfectly, dispensing with a lot of gender tropes in the process.
One that Gillian Jacobs, who plays Mickey in the Judd Apatow-created series, was pleased to see the back of was the idea that only men masturbate.
Recalling an awkward scene in the first season, she told ES Magazine: "It's so great that you see Mickey masturbating in front of her cat.
"There have been so many scenes of men masturbating in film and on TV, and so few of women."
Love chronicles the intertwining of the lives of two struggling creatives in LA, and doesn’t follow the trajectory you might expect from the title.
Judd Apatow is currently working on a second season consisting of 12 episodes, with Jacobs and co-star Paul Rust set to return.
The full interview with Jacobs appears in this week’s ES Magazine, out 28 April.
