From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Kate McKinnon tricked several New Yorkers into thinking she was Reese Witherspoon in a hilarious brand new episode of Billy on the Street.

Alongside host Billy Eichner, the Saturday Night Live star approached members of the public with the former introducing her as the Big Little Lies actor.

Practically every person they spoke to seemed to think it was the Legally Blonde star, with just two people correcting Eichner.

At one stage, McKinnon is presented with a man who it soon emerges met Witherspoon at an event hosted by the daughter of filmmaker Nancy Meyers, whose husband directed her in Home Again.

"We were at Nancy Meyers' daughter's film. We had a long conversation. I'm Sheila's husband," the man says, failing to realise it's not Witherspoon at all.

"I remember you!" McKinnon exclaims, embracing him. He goes onto invite her for dinner "the next time she's in town".

Big Little Lies returns for a second season on 10 June. Witherspoon is back alongside Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and new cast member Meryl Streep. You can watch the intense trailer here.
