Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Kate Garraway has laughed off viewer comments about her “cluttered” home that featured in her recent ITV documentary.

The one-off feature – titled Finding Derek – follows the Good Morning Britain presenter and her husband Derek Draper, who has been in hospital for a year. After contracting coronavirus last March, Draper was placed in an induced coma.

After Finding Derek aired on Tuesday night (23 March), viewers voiced their support for Garraway on social media and praised the documentary as “incredibly moving”.

Among the responses, however, were some comments about the presenter’s home.

Speaking with Susanna Reid and Adil Ray on today’s episode of GMB (26 March), Garraway discussed the viewer response to her documentary, stating she was “overwhelmed by the support”.

The 53-year-old also said she “smiled” at the remarks about how untidy she is.

“I also smiled at the number of people who pointed out how really untidy I am,” she laughed. “Can I just say there were builders in at the time.”

Ray quipped: “I’ve heard it makes no difference in your house whether there’s builders there or not, to be honest!” to which Garraway replied: “Don’t get a documentary crew around today.”

Reid added: “That just shows how down to earth you are, Kate. Don’t you think?”

Following the documentary’s broadcast earlier this week, one user wrote on Twitter: “After watching Kate Garraway on TV this morning I can’t think of anyone more deserving of DIY SOS to help get her house ready for husband coming home from hospital x.”

Another user said: “I am 100% behind Kate Garraway and she has all my sympathy but god the state of that house is giving me an anxiety attack.”

“I’ve always liked Kate Garraway, very down to earth unlike so many famous people, I love her cluttered up house, there is comfort in clutter,” wrote someone else.

A fourth user added: “I can relate entirely to the lived in messiness and clutter of Kate Garraway’s house. All those celebrity ‘showhouses’ are usually so incredibly fake and soulless.”

“I’m thinking of starting a #GoFundMe page for Kate Garraway, that house is a mess,” said one person, while another wrote: “My god I cannot help but want to go to Kate Garraway’s house and declutter it.”

Kate Garraway: Finding Derek is available to watch on the ITV Hub.
