Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Kate Garraway has welcomed back Alex Beresford to Good Morning Britain following “tumultuous times”.

Beresford returned to the presenting panel to co-host this morning’s episode (26 March) alongside Garraway.

The 40-year-old had previously been on a short break from ITV’s breakfast show in the wake of his on-air row with former GMB host Piers Morgan earlier this month.

While Beresford returned to present the weather last Friday (19 March), this is the first time he has been on the presenting panel since the controversy.

As Beresford opened the show, Garraway said it was good to see him as she spoke of “tumultuous times”.

“And you’ve had tumultuous times as well Alex, it’s lovely to have you here. It very much is,” she said.

Beresford appeared to be in good spirits, responding: “It’s good to be back.”

On 10 March, Morgan walked off set during filming after Beresford confronted him about comments he had made about Meghan Markle following her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Morgan’s comments, which included the suggestion that he thought the Duchess of Cambridge was lying about experiencing suicidal thoughts during her time as a senior royal, prompted a record number of complaints to broadcast watchdog Ofcom (more than 57,000).

Morgan announced his departure from GMB later that evening. Beresford did not appear on the ITV show for 10 days afterwards.

He later addressed Morgan’s decision to leave the show on Twitter, stating: “I didn’t want him to quit, but I did want him to listen.”

Following his exit, Morgan is reportedly at “the centre of a £10m bidding war” that could see him return to the US.

It’s reported that American media mogul Rupert Murdoch is attempting to lure Morgan as well as bosses at GB News, a new 24-hour channel aimed at rivalling Sky News and the BBC.
