From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

John Oliver’s latest season of Last Week Tonight has come to an end, the comedian spending the last show harpooning Donald Trump.

However, before going on a barrage against the President, Oliver quickly recapped the past week, including one joke about Louis CK’s sexual misconduct.

“The New York Times reporting Louis C.K.’s gross sexual misconduct, which is completely indefensible, and which inevitably resulted in the cancellation of his new film, Exhibit A if This Ever Goes to Trial,” Oliver said, commenting on the cancellation of CK’s film I Love You, Daddy.

“Now, as for the president,” Oliver said. “He’s been overseas all week, which should have been relaxing for the rest of us. Until this happened last night.”

The host then brought up an already infamous Tweet posted by Trump while abroad, reading: “Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me ‘old,’ when I would NEVER call him ‘short and fat?’ Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend - and maybe someday that will happen!”

“This would be the stupidest possible reason for all of us to die,” Oliver continued. “I’m serious. If the entire country simultaneously tripped while putting on its underwear and fell face-forward into the toilet, got stuck, and drowned, it would be considerably less stupid than if that tweet caused a nuclear apocalypse.”

Oliver then walked the audience through Trump’s most memorable moments from the past year. These included him telling the French president’s wife she’s in good shape, the state department mentioning Trump golf resorts on their official website, and a regrettable incident where he talked about “clean coal meaning they’re taking out coal and they’re going to clean it.”

After more critical reasoning about Trump, the actor Tom Hanks then made a brief cameo appearance in a spoof film trailer featuring five wax Presidents. Watch below.

Last week, Oliver also dedicated his show to calling out the President, paying particular attention to the ongoing Russian probe.
