From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Presenter Jeremy Vine has claimed he is “slightly terrified” at the prospect of co-hosting a programme with his wife, Rachel Schofield.

The couple have been married for 18 years, but have never presented together before.

BBC News presenter Schofield will step in for the absent Storm Huntley to co-host Jeremy Vine for a week starting from 7 September.

Announcing the move, she said: “I think between us Jeremy and I have over 50 years of broadcasting experience, but amazingly we’ve never ventured into a studio together before, so stepping into the brilliant Storm’s shoes for a week is a unique opportunity.”

“I just think I might need it in the contract that he makes the tea when the alarm goes off,” she added.

Jeremy Vine airs weekdays on Channel 5. The topical chat show has been running on the channel since 2018.

As well as Huntley (previously known for her role on The Wright Stuff), the show also features Rezzy Ghadjar and Will Njobvu as deputy co-presenters.

Vine said of Schofield’s pending involvement: “I’m slightly terrified. Storm’s away, and someone thought of asking Rachel in.

“She is, of course, streets ahead of me in every dimension, so I know I’ll be in good hands. Secretly I can’t wait.”

As well as BBC News, Schofield has worked as a presenter on BBC Radio 4.
