From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A Jeopardy! contestant confused Janet Jackson and Ariana Grande in a recent episode.

The participant, named Alwin, made the mistake in an instalment of the game show that aired on Wednesday.

The question, worth $800, appeared in the category “Billboard Music Awards”.

“As the recipient of the 2018 icon award, the took ‘control’ and took to the stage in her first live TV performance in nearly a decade,” read host Alex Trebek.

Control is the name of an album released in 1986 by Jackson.

A video of her performance at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards was then shown on screen, after which Alwin signalled he wanted to answer Trebek’s question.

“Who’s Ariana Grande?” was his guess, which was met by Trebek with a simple “no”.

Another contestant named Sarah (who suffered a pop culture blunder of her own earlier this week on the show) then gave the correct answer.
