From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

James Corden has performed a comic musical parody of Donald Trump’s behaviour amid his coronavirus diagnosis.

The talk show host sang a spoof of Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” – renamed “Maybe I’m Immune” – in a teaser clip for tonight’s episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden.

The lyrics of McCartney’s classic had been altered to reference the saga of events that unfolded in the wake of the president’s recent diagnosis, including the removal of his face mask in a room full of people.

“Maybe I’m a man and maybe I don’t wear a mask because I don’t care about others. Science, I don’t really understand,” sang the comedian.

The performance was accompanied with brief clips of Trump, including footage of his now-famous suggestion that injecting disinfectant could be a viable way of combating the virus.

Playing the piano, Corden continued: “Maybe I’m immune to the ways the polls are looking now. Maybe I’m afraid it’s not fake news. Maybe I’m immune to all the lies that I have made, I shouldn’t have downplayed.”

Referring to the forthcoming election next month, he sang: “Maybe I’m afraid that I might lose this.”

Corden is the latest celebrity to condemn Trump for his actions and comments he has made amid his coronavirus diagnosis.

Yesterday (7 October), the US president was on his way back to the White House after being checked out of hospital when he took his mask off for a photo opportunity. He then turned and entered a room full of aides without putting it back on.
