From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Insecure, the acclaimed TV show co-created by and starring Issa Rae, will end after a fifth season.

Rae broke the news on Wednesday in a statement to Deadline, telling the publication that she and executive producer Prentice Penny “are so grateful that HBO believed in our show from the beginning and kept faith in us to see our vision through the end”.

“We always planned to tell this story through five seasons, but we couldn’t have made it this far without the tremendous support of our audience,” Rae added. “I feel blessed beyond measure to bring our characters’ stories to an end, on-screen at least.”

The programme’s fifth and final season is expected to go into production later this January. A release date has yet to be specified, although the series should air in 2021.

Insecure began airing in October 2016. The show, based on Rae’s Awkward Black Girl web series, also stars Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Amanda Seales, Natasha Rothwell, and more.

It has been nominated for two Golden Globes and four Emmy Awards.

At last year’s Emmy’s, Insecure was in the running for Outstanding Comedy Series. Rae was among the nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (she was nominated for the same award in 2018), and Orji was a contender for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
