From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The decadent and depraved adventures of Hunter S. Thompson are to be turned into a TV show from the production company behind The Handmaid's Tale and Fargo.

MGM Television announced on Monday that it is developing an authorised bio series about the gonzo journalist, with Davey Holmes (Get Shorty, Shameless) showrunning and Oscar-nominated Nebraska writer Bob Nelson set to join him if it's picked up to series.

It will be called Fear & Loathing, after Thompson's famous, semi-autobiographical novel, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream.

Though details on the show are scant to non-existent to this point, the name, notably missing the 'in Las Vegas' suffix of Terry Gilliam's 1998 film, suggests that it will be broader than just Thompson's descent into drug-induced mania in the gambling capital of the world.

A prolific writer and journalist, Thompson also wrote up wild experiences from the Nixon campaign trail, Kentucky Derby, Honolulu Marathon and more.

The forthcoming casting of Thompson will be key to the show's success, with whoever lands the role working in the shadow of Johnny Depp's popular portrayal in the movie.
