Late last year, the BBC announced it had ordered a TV adaptation of Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials, exciting fans who were left disappointed Hollywood didn’t create a sequel to The Golden Compass.

Finally, the broadcaster has revealed who will be writing the adaptation, announcing triple Bafta-nominated Jack Thorne.

Thorne’s past work includes the This Is England series, Skins and the next instalment in the Harry Potter series, the two-part stage play Cursed Child.

Singing Thorne’s praises was Pullman, who said of the playwright: “Jack is a writer of formidable energy and range, and I’ve greatly enjoyed talking to him and learning about his plans for bringing His Dark Materials to the screen.

“I’m certain he’ll do a superb job, and I look forward to seeing the whole project develop as he shapes the story.”

His Dark Materials was a three part series that included the novels The Amber Spyglass, Northern Lights and The Subtle Knife. The story focussed on an orphan named Lyra who lives in a parallel universe where science, magic, and theology are inextricably connected.

Filming for the BBC One series will take place in Wales with the cast yet to be confirmed.
