In one of the bigger surprises to come out of this weekend’s Disney D23 Expo, Duff appeared to announce the series, which will act as a sequel to the original show and follow Lizzie as a 30-year-old living and working in Manhattan.
Terri Minsky, who created the original show, will be the showrunner on the series, which is expected to debut in 2020 on the forthcoming Disney streaming service Disney+.
Writing on Instagram, Duff said that she had “been trying to contain this excitement for a loooong time while this has been in the works!” adding: “I am beyond excited to be home again, back with my girl and into her 30’s.” She also hashtagged the message with “#bringbackbutterflyclips”.
Lizzie McGuire ran from 2001 until 2004 on the Disney Channel, with Duff playing a teenage girl muddling through high school and striving for popularity.
The show was turned into a film, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, in 2004, before Duff embarked on an acting and musical career outside of Disney. She currently stars on the US comedy-drama Younger.
