Sci-fi queen Zoe Saldana may have her sights set on a role in Doctor Who.

The American actress, who has starred in Avatar, Star Trek and Marvel’s new film Guardians of the Galaxy, said she would jump at the chance if she were offered a role in the long-standing BBC drama.

When asked if she would like to star in the series, she said: “Oh my god, that would be amazing. I would love it.”

Saldana said her 11-year-old niece was a “die hard Whovian” who would think her eternally “cool” if she starred in the sci-fi show.

“It would be wonderful to me to be in Doctor Who. I’d be cool forever to her,” she told Den of Geek.

She added that her Guardians of the Galaxy co-star and former Doctor Who actress Karen Gillan had had sent her niece a film of her saying hi when they were on set.

“I have an 11-year-old niece who is a die hard Whovian, and what made her year is that Karen Gillan sent her a video of her going hi. My niece knows every single actor from the beginnings of the show. She dresses like a Whovian every day, that blue colour,” she said.

Saldana, who plays green superhero Gamora in the forthcoming Marvel movie, also said in the interview that she was tired of being type casted as “the strong woman”.

“It bothers me that I’m always told that I do strong female characters…It’s because we don’t really know women. We don’t write women accurately. We don’t see women the way that we should see women as a society, as a human race.

“When you see a real woman, you shouldn’t be saying she’s strong, you should be saying she’s real.”

Guardians of the Galaxy is released in the UK on Thursday 31 July. Doctor Who returns to BBC One on Saturday 23 August.
