From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Great British Bake Off star Laura Adlington may have missed out on winning the series, but she does now have a very famous fan.

Adlington was beaten by Peter Sawkins, who became the series' youngest ever winner earlier this week.

But, she was left surprised after receiving a supportive message from Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke

Appearing on spinoff show Extra Slice, Adlington revealed that the actor, who played Daenerys Targaryen on the HBO show, had sent her a direct message ahead of the finale.

"Emilia Clarke, mother of dragons from Game of Thrones, sent me a message," she said.

"[Clarke] just said, 'Laura, me and my friends love you. Thanks for brightening up our lockdown. We hope you win.'"

Adlington added: "I think she called me a “baking queen”. So my life is now complete, quite frankly. Friends with Matt Lucas and Emilia Clarke. Doesn’t get better than that, does it?"

Lucas co-hosted this year's series alongside Noel Fielding following the departure of Sandi Toksvig.

The Great British Bake Off can be streamed on All4.
