Jodie Comer’s absence from the Golden Globes on Sunday night (28 February) has led to confusion among some viewers.
This year’s ceremony was semi-virtual, meaning most of the nominees attended via video link as their categories were announced.
Comer was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series – Drama for her role as Villanelle in Killing Eve.
However, she did not attend the ceremony, so while her competitors Olivia Colman, Emma Corrin, Laura Linney and Sarah Paulson could all be seen live, a still photograph of Comer was shown.
As Corrin was announced as the winner for her performance as Princess Diana in The Crown, all the other nominees applauded the star – except for Comer, of course.
Some viewers did not realise that Comer wasn’t actually there, and that what they were seeing was an image.

One Twitter user posted a laughing emoji with the words: “Omg, my wife just said ‘Jodie Comer does not look happy about losing.’ I was like, ‘That’s a photo of her. She’s not there.’”
“Why did it take me so long to realise that’s a picture,” wrote another, with a crying emoji.

A third said: “I really thought jodie comer wasn’t having a reaction... it took me a second to realise it was a pic why am I like this.”
Others had fun with the video, joking that the British actor was too busy sleeping to attend the event.

In her acceptance speech, Corrin thanked the late Princess Diana, who she played in The Crown, saying: “You have taught me compassion and empathy beyond any measure that I could ever imagine. On behalf of everyone who remembers you so fondly and passionately in our hearts, thank you.”
